This is one of five coins struck by the Royal Australian Mint, Canberra marking the Royal Melbourne Golf Club's hosting of one of golf's premier team competitions, the President's Cup, between 14-20 November 2011.
A portion of the coins struck were sold at a stand hosted by the mint at the Royal Melbourne Golf Course during the event.
Beginning in 1994, the Presidents Cup comprises a series of golf matches that sees the best golfers from the USA take on an elite international team. The event is hosted alternately every two years by the USA and by a country represented in the international team. In 2011, the event was hosted by Australia's oldest and most prestigious golf course - Royal Melbourne.
The coloured reverse design features the 2011 President's Cup logo and the cup itself imposed over a dimpled golf ball. The design was not by an individual but a collaborative RAM effort. The coin is housed encapsulated, in a black, hinged-lid presentation case, protected in a themed cardboard shipper and accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity.
