BICENTENARY OF THE HOLEY DOLLAR & DUMP.
Australia's early colonial economy, once an unregulated medley of foreign coins, rum and promissory notes, was bolstered by the introduction of the Holey Dollar and Dump in dated 1813 but not issued until 1814. Made from Spanish silver 'pieces of eight', our first official coins were worth five shillings and fifteen pence respectively and they were designed by a convicted forger!
