$10 2005 Sydney Mint Sesquicentenary Silver Proof Coin

This coin was issued to mark the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Royal Sydney Mint which is situated still to this day in Macquarie Street Sydney. The coin is housed encapsulated in a chocolate coloured leatherette hinged-lid presentation case protected by a colourful outer cardboard box and accompanied by a numbered fold-out explanatory sheet.

The gold plated image on the obverse depicts an artistic impression of the building as it was in the period 1900-10.

The Sydney Mint building is regarded as one of the oldest classically detailed buildings in Australia. It remains one of Sydney's popular tourist attractions even though mint operations ceased in the 1920's. As Sydney has matured and modernised the Mint building has undergone several renovations and housed a range of professions and organisations including government departments and law courts.

Today it houses an historic Museum a tourist cafe and is also occupied by the Historic Houses Trust of New South Wales.
