1966 Proof Set - Original RAM Box of 5 Sets
Decimal currency commenced in Australia on 14th February 1966. The Royal Australian Mint started offering the 1966 dated six coin proof set in October 1967 through to 1968, with an issue price of $12.50 per set + $1.00 postage. The 1c to 50c coins were housed unsealed in two different types of velvet and satin-lined blue cases - light blue and dark blue.
Between 1967-1969 only 18,110 proof sets were produced and distributed around the world with an initial limit of 5 per order. Because the coins in the set were not sealed, storage in other than optimum conditions has resulted in a significant proportion of them containing spotted, fingerprint, spoiled and mishandled coins. It is now very difficult to find a pristine quality set with unimpaired coins. The five x 1966 Proof Sets in light blue cases that we have on offer comes complete with the original and official mailing box with Royal Australian Mint tape and mailing label - yes only one available! Light toning and cases are aged and second quality.
