1992 Masterpieces in Gold Royal Ladies

The 1992 Royal Ladies Masterpieces in Gold set was issued by the Royal Australian Mint to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Accession of Queen Elizabeth II (1952-1992).

The issue limit of 5,000 was not reached with just 1,045 sets actually sold.

Each set consists of four proof 22 carat gold (.916 fine) Two Hundred & Fifty Dollar coins portraying Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse of each with reverse portraits of:

  • the Queen Mother,
  • Princess Diana,
  • Princess Ann and
  • Princess Margaret.

A 34mm diameter, 33.93 grams (one ounce), plain edged Gold Medallion Royal completes the set.

The obverse design on the medallion depicts the Queen on the throne. The reverse design links the issue of the set to the Commonwealth Games Federation where fundraising to secure the future viability of the Games was a major factor in the issue of the set.

The total gold weight of the four coins and medallion is 101.73 grams (2.9981 ounces).

The coins and Medallion Royal are displayed in a timber frame which can be removed from the presentation case for see-both-sides viewing. The case is crafted from Australian native timbers - Fiddleback Blackwood for the case with Tasmanian Oak burl veneer inserts - and embellished with rich burgundy velvet.

The set is accompanied by a booklet with a concise biography of each of the five royal ladies, a colour photograph of each, and their coat of arms. The booklet has a foreword by Prince Edward and information about the Commonwealth Games Federation and Stuart Devlin, who designed and sculpted each of the coins and the medallion.
