2011 Treasures of Australia Pearl Locket - 1oz Silver Proof

The Kimberly town of Broome became the home of Australia's oyster fishing industry in the 18th century. Today it is renowned for 'cultured' South Sea pearls the most sought-after in the world. Oysters create natural pearls by depositing layers of nacre over a grain of sand or other 'intruder' that settles inside the shell. Cultured pearls develop around a bead implanted by human hand. A traditional bridal gift pearl is the modern birthstone of people born in June.

Recognising the importance of pearls in Australian history this final release in the Treasures of Australia locket series encapsulates a pearl.

The five-year Treasures of Australia series celebrates the continent's abundance of natural riches by featuring five glittering prizes found in Australia - Sapphires Opals Diamonds Gold and Pearls.

The reverse design portrays an abstract interpretation of Australia’s marine environment one of the world's richest sources of South Sea pearls. The lower half of the coin incorporates a transparent 'locket' inlaid with mother of pearl framing a keshi pearl.

The coin is housed in a presentation case with a jarrah timber swivel lid protected by a colourful cardboard shipper which have marks on the corners also accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity.
