Discovered near the Victorian goldfields town of Moliagul by John Deason on 5 February 1869 the famous Welcome Stranger nugget is the largest-known alluvial gold nugget ever found estimated to weigh a total of 72 kilos and containing almost 2 300oz of gold. After its discovery in 1869 it sold for about 10 000 British pounds which is the equivalent to $AUD2.16 million today.
To mark 150 years since the discovery of the Welcome Stranger gold nugget The Perth Mint has struck a $1 1oz 99.99% pure silver and $100 1oz 99.99% pure gold coins. The reverse of each coin portrays a representation of the Welcome Stranger nugget.
