To celebrate the International Year of Space in 1992 an Australia wide competition was held to design a commemorative $5 coin. The brief called for designs reflecting Australia's role in the space industry and the benefits of space technology to our lifestyles.
The winning design was by John Skillington a teacher from Albury in NSW features a map of Australia flag & Southern Cross.
