$5 2000 Olympic - Emu & Wattle Silver Proof
EMU & WATTLE
A three year joint program the Royal Australian Mint and The Perth Mint struck sixteen different 99.9% pure silver five dollar proofs for the Sydney Olympics dated 2000. Each coin has the edge lettering GAMES OF THE XXVII OLYMPIAD.
Stuart Devlin's original concept description:
The centre will feature a group of emus in their natural habitat. The motif for the border will be wattle blossom Australia's national flower. Both the wattle and the emu form important parts of the Australian Coat of Arms.
His comments on the final design:
'The emu with its long neck and legs is yet another difficult fellow to handle within the circular nature of the coin. I solved this problem and made the design much more interesting by using two adults and two chicks with nine eggs.' second quality
