$5 2000 Sydney Olympics - Festival of the Dreaming Silver Proof
FESTIVAL OF THE DREAMING
A three year joint program the Royal Australian Mint and The Perth Mint struck sixteen different 99.9% pure silver five dollar proofs for the Sydney Olympics dated 2000. Each coin has the edge lettering GAMES OF THE XXVII OLYMPIAD.
Stuart Devlin's original concept description:
Aboriginal interpretation of sport and dreaming circled by creatures of the sea around Australia - from drawings by the Aboriginal athlete and artist Nova Peris-Kneebone. The whole is framed by a border of the running figure from the Sydney 2000 logo.
His comments on the final design:
'Nova Peris-Kneebone the first Aboriginal athlete to win an Olympic gold medal contributed to this design. She did a series of outline drawings for me in a small sketchbook. I asked her to draw some animals and she chose to draw a whole series of creatures of the sea surrounding Australia. I interpreted these in relief and formed them into a very decorative border. Nova was extremely nice to work with and I very much enjoyed the association.'second quality outer case
