A three year joint program the Royal Australian Mint and The Perth Mint struck sixteen different 99.9% pure silver five dollar proofs for the Sydney Olympics dated 2000. Each coin has the edge lettering GAMES OF THE XXVII OLYMPIAD.
Stuart Devlin's original concept description:
A kangaroo protecting the 'joey' in her pouch enclosed by a border of Australian grasstrees. The whole is encircled by a double inscription introducing the program and establishing its directions.
His comments on the final design:
'I deleted a reference to the silver purity and added two inscriptions as suggested by the Sydney Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (SOCOG). I chose this particular position of the kangaroo so that it would relate well to the circular shape of the coin and grasstrees for the border because they would look rich on the coin and to do something a little unexpected.' Outer case deteriorated as normal for age
