The first time baseball officially appeared in the Olympic Games was in 1912 in Stockholm Sweden. It first appeared in the United States in 1846 having more directly evolved from the English game of rounders or cricket. It is the only sport in history to be included as an exhibition or demonstration sport seven times before finally achieving medal status at Barcelona Spain in 1992. It is now played in more than 120 countries and 88 years later follows sports such as basketball and cycling in opening the door to professionals.
