$5 2000 Sydney Olympics Cycling Al/Bronze UNC
Issued in April 1998 this coin is the 25th in a 28 Coin Sydney 2000 Aluminium Bronze Specimen Collection produced jointly by the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra and the Perth Mint. The coin is presented sealed on a credit-card style pack.
With the development in the 1880s of the chain and gearing system (that saw bikes evolve from the awkward penny-farthing style to the sleeker shape familiar today) cycling was a natural for inclusion in the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. In the 100-plus years since then the sport has evolved considerably as athletes and engineers experiment with anything that will shave a few seconds off their time. At the Olympic Games cycling has branched into three separate disciplines - road track and mountain bike - each requiring its own distinct skills and equipment.
