Sprint canoe-kayak was a demonstration sport at the 1924 Olympic Games gaining full-medal status in 1936. The dramatic whitewater branch of the sport - slalom - was added in 1972 but didn't appear again until Barcelona in 1992. Women compete only in kayaks - closed boats paddled from a sitting position with a double-bladed paddle. Men race in kayaks and canoes - boats paddled from a kneeling position with a single-bladed paddle
