The sport appeared in the Olympic program for the first time at the 1936 Berlin Games when it was played on a football pitch and eleven-a-side. The sport appeared in its present indoor form in 1972 at Munich. The women's division opened in 1976 and the sport has become one of the most highly attended Olympic events.
