Issued in April 1999 this coin is the 19th in a 28 Coin Sydney 2000 Aluminium Bronze Specimen Collection produced jointly by the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra and the Perth Mint. The coin is presented sealed on a credit-card style pack.
When taekwondo debuts as one of two new Olympic sports the Games of the new Millennium will be 'introducing' a sport that is 2000 years old. A move in Korea in the 1950s to unify the various forms of martial arts and create one sport led to taekwondo meaning 'the way of hands and feet'. By the 1960s interest was spreading overseas. The first Olympics exposure came in 1988 at Seoul naturally enough as a demonstration sport.
