$5 2000 Sydney Olympics Tennis Al/Bronze UNC
Issued in April 1999 this coin is the last in a 28 Coin Sydney 2000 Aluminium Bronze Specimen Collection produced jointly by the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra and the Perth Mint. The coin is presented sealed on a credit-card style pack.
When Irishman John Boland travelled to Athens for the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 he had no idea he would return home with the gold medal in tennis. But then he had no idea he would compete either - he went as a spectator. Tennis fell from the Olympic program after 1924 and didn't return as a medal sport until 1988. All matches except the men's finals are played to best of three sets. The men's singles and doubles finals are best-of-five.
