Triathlon debuts as a new Olympic sport at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. The first recognised triathlon was staged in 1974 in San Diego USA. The sport began in Australia in 1981 and has developed at a dramatic rate ever since. The ultimate endurance test athletes are required to excel at three very different pursuits - swimming cycling and running.
