$5 2002 Queen Mother Silver Proof

This coin was issued to commemorate the death of the Queen Mother in 2002. As the Duchess of York she travelled to Australia with her husband the Duke (later King George VI) in 1927 for the opening of the first Parliament House in Canberra.

The reverse design of the coin is based on a photograph taken at the Adelaide Cup at Morphettville Race Course in South Australia in May 1927. Her portrait is surrounded by wattle blossoms Australia's national floral emblem entwined with 'Elizabeth of Glamis' rose blossoms.

The Ian Rank-Broadley obverse portrait of Queen Elizabeth II varies slightly from other proof issues displaying a polished tiara and earring instead of the normal frosted finish of the remainder of the design. Boxes may be imperfect OR second quality
