$5 2004 Steam Railway 150th Anniversary Silver Proof
This coin was issued to commemorate the 150-year history of steam power in Australia. The reverse design features a powerful steam-driven train emerging from the Australian landscape and honours the important role the railways played in building the Australian nation.
On 12 September 1854 before a large crowd of onlookers the first train to operate in Australia completed a journey of 4 kilometers from Melbourne's Flinders St. Station to Port Melbourne. Since that historic first journey railways have spread across Australia including some of the longest passenger train journeys in the world.
The coin is housed encapsulated in a deep red hinged-lid presentation case protected by a colourful cardboard case. A numbered certificate of authenticity and a 12-page booklet exploring the history of railways in Australia accompany the coin.
