This coin is the third in a 4-Coin series commemorating the International Polar Year 2007-2008 (IPY). The 3-image hologram on the reverse takes design elements from the previous two coins in the series (Skua and Explorers) and creates a spectacular effect reflecting the changing colours of the Aurora Australis, also known as the Southern Lights.
The coin is housed encapsulated in a cream coloured leatherette, hinged-lid presentation case, protected by a colourful cardboard shipper and accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity. The issue limit of 12,500 was not reached with the mintage declared at 8,504 proof coins.
