The proof version of this coin was issued in March 2000 to celebrate the Royal Visit of Queen Elizabeth II. Only 18 993 coins were struck each encapsulated and housed in a red velvet hinged-lid presentation case with St. Edward's Crown embossing accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity and protected by a royal blue and grey cardboard box.
Of particular interest is the new effigy of the queen used exclusively on the obverse of this coin. Designed by Vladimir Gottwald it is first time since 1936 that an effigy of the monarch designed by an Australian features on an Australian coin.
