50c 2013 Stamps Centenary Carded UNC
100 Years of Commonwealth Stamps 1913-2013
Not struck for circulation this coin was issued to mark the centenary of the first Commonwealth postage stamp issues in 1913. Australia’s first national stamp issue had a troubled beginning. A decade after the federation of Australia's six colonies the Postmaster-General’s Department sought designs for the young nation's first stamps which would in time replace colonial and state stamp issues. After more than a year of submissions and political debate the Kangaroo and Map postage stamps were finally released in 1913.
The reverse design depicts stylised Kangaroo and Map Penny Red Stamp with a standing kangaroo placed over a map of Australia which in turn is extruded over a representation of a postage stamp.
The coin is encapsulated on an official Royal Australian Mint card.
