Known as Australia's bloodiest day the 1916 Battle of Fromelles took 5533 Australian casualties including 1917 lives. Fighting alongside British Troops the objective was to capture and hold a line of German trenches in an effort to prevent the enemy from sending reinforcements to the Somme.
Struck by the Royal Australian Mint this cupro-nickel uncirculated 50¢ reverse was skillfully composed from a variety of historical photographs documenting the lives of the 5th division of the Western Front.
