


Australia (1853) Port Phillip Kangaroo Office Pattern 1oz
Struck from original dies by W. J. Taylor, London, re-struck by Stokes of Melbourne in 1919, this Australian Port Phillip Kangaroo Office £4 'one ounce of pure Australian gold' restrike in gilt bronze is dated 1853.
It has a 28.5mm diameter plain edge weighs 12.49 grams. This is similar to the type that is residing in the National Gallery of Victoria Museum.
The obverse and reverse designs were engraved by W.J.Taylor. Depicted on the obverse is a kangaroo facing right with the date 1853 below. A broad raised engine-turned rim encompasses the incuse legend "Port Phillip" and "Australia".
The reverse shows an arabic '1' with the words "One Ounce" superimposed on the vertical stroke of the "1". A broad raised rim features the incuse legend "Pure Australian Gold" and "One Ounce".
