Australia 1921 Kookaburra Pattern Square Penny Trial UNC
With only a few hundred struck possibly as few as 100-200 pieces the Kookaburra Pattern series forms one of Australia's great numismatic rarities.
The square trials resulted from an initiative to find a lighter and more durable alternative to the bulky copper circulation pennies and halfpennies. Thirteen different copper-nickel types dated 1919-1921 were struck and distributed to government officials VIP's and dignitaries for assessment.
While the distinctive square coins met with some approval opposition from vending machine operators the high cost of importing nickel difficulties striking and the resignation of treasurer William Watt saw the project shelved.
Struck by the Melbourne Mint this Renniks type 12 Kookaburra Penny is much rarer than 1930 pennies 1852 Adelaide Pounds and even the most sought after 1813 Holey Dollars and Dumps.
