Australia 1934/3 Overdate Threepence

1934/3 Overdate Threepence

Opinions vary on how the coin came to exist. Like it's 1922/1 predecessor, mint officials deny it's existence. However the sheer strength of the 3 underdate and the prices that collectors are willing to pay make it evident that the numismatic community has over-ruled any official denial.

Two possibilities for its creation have been put forward. The first is that a Melbourne Mint engraver may have manually overpunched a 4 onto an annealed 1933 working die. This would explain the strength of the 1 underdate typical of this type of overdating technique.

The second possibility is that a 1933 working die was hobbed with a 1934 punch either accidentally or as an experiment.
