England 1905-1906 Stamford Spalding & Boston Banking Co. 10 Pound FBN1858
In the late 19th and early 20th century local banks proliferated in England unfortunately not all survived and some were taken over by bigger banks.
The Stamford Spalding and Boston Banking Company Limited was a joint-stock bank founded in 1832 partly as a response to losses and a withdrawal of banking services by other banks in the areas of Stamford Spalding and Oundle. The main business of the bank was in the agricultural Fenland. This meant that when the great farming depression began in the 1870s the company sought to gain business in manufacturing towns.
It issued notes until 1907 and in 1911 became part of the Barclays Bank. Printed by the London firm Perkins Bacon and Company Limited these ten pounds are dated 1905-1906 and all feature a unique serial number. The signature panel is cut out to show that the note was honoured by Barclays.
