1994 Mint Set - Year of the Family

The United Nations declared 1994 the International Year of the Family. In an effort to raise awareness of the good things about family life, the future of families through children and the diverse nature of the Australian family, the Royal Australian Mint held a nation-wide competition to design a commemorative fifty cent coin. The winning design by Carolyn Rosser is featured in the 1994 Coin Set.

Carolyn's view of the meaning of the Year of the Family is reflected in her design:

'In Australia there are many types of families and the bonds which link these families are diverse. The image I have used is deliberately ambiguous in the sense that it is not representative of any particular race, religion of gender. The design is bold and friendly with an element of fun and without emphasis on the individual. The strength of the lines is symbolic of the strength of the family as a unit and communicates the positivity of the family.'

This set represents the annual release by the Royal Australian Mint of Australia's circulating coins. The 1994 set consists of six coins:

  • Five Cents,
  • Ten Cents,
  • Twenty Cents,
  • International Year of the Family Fifty Cents,
  • One Dollar and
  • Two Dollars.
